Workshop on Defining New Simulation Frontiers for Dark Matter Discovery
Description
This workshop will bring together experts in particle physics theory, cosmology, theoretical and numerical astrophysics to discuss challenges in making detailed astrophysics predictions using state-of-the-art numerical simulations for various dark matter models. These constitute urgent targets for precision study given theoretical motivations from particle theory and empirical hints from galactic observations today.
One of the goals of this workshop is to identify a number of dark matter benchmark models that are representative of the qualitatively different astrophysical phenomena that can arise, and to coordinate the development of the simulation tools that will allow for detailed astrophysical predictions to be made. This will ensure that simulation tools do not get locked into the specifics of the simplest dark matter models and rather develop the broad simulation capabilities required for the discovery or diagnosis of a broad spectrum of dark matter properties from astrophysical observations.
The workshop will lay the foundations for a new co-ordinated effort in the development of numerical simulation techniques for cosmology and astrophysics, that will greatly impact the experimental and observational strategies to discover the nature of dark matter.
