Apprenticeship Program in Commutative Algebra
Description
The Apprenticeship Program in Commutative Algebra is intended for senior graduate students, post-docs, and early-career researchers. Over the course of two weeks, small groups will be guided by senior mentors to tackle a research-level problem in commutative algebra and related fields. The ultimate aim of this Apprenticeship Program is to demonstrate the process of creating an original research publication, from generating ideas, writing up results, working with co-authors, and submitting your work. In addition, attendees will be able to participate in professional development activities.
The workshop will consist of six senior members who will each mentor up to six people. The senior members will propose possible research problems and topics by Summer 2024. Applications to participate will be due in Fall 2024. Further details on the selection process will be provided, but applicants will provide a ranking of their preferred projects. The organizers and the mentors will be responsible for selecting the participants.
Participants will be expected to participate with their mentor and group over the course of a semester. Before the workshop, participants will meet virtually to discuss the problem with their mentor. During the week of the workshop, all participants will gather in Toronto to work directly with their mentor and their fellow group members. Groups will be asked to give short talks to all participants in order to practice their presentation skills. The senior members will also provide feedback on their presentations. The intention is that at the end of the workshop, each group will have the basis for a research publication. Over the rest of the semester, each group will continue to work on their project at their home institutions, but will be in contact with the senior members. The senior members will be able to provide feedback on their publication before submission.
The event is modelled after the highly successful Apprenticeship Program which was run by the Combinatorial Algebraic Geometry Thematic Program that was run at the Fields Institute in 2016, the PRAGMATIC workshops that have been held at the Università di Catania, and the AMS Mathematics Research Communities, to name a few.
