Rationale:

This workshop is part of a six month thematic program on Automorphic Forms which is scheduled to take place between January and June 2003 at the Fields Institute.

The goal of the workshop is to discuss recent progress in areas of algebraic geometry, automorphic forms, and representation theory which relate to Shimura varieties.

Some of the topics to be discussed will be:

1) The construction of well-behaved integral models
for Shimura varieties and the fine structure of their reductions,

2) CM cycles, Eisenstein series and Gross-Zagier type formulae,

3) The calculation of the Hasse-Weil zeta function
and relations with the local and global Langlands conjectures,

4) Relations with the Arthur-Selberg trace formula and the fundamental lemma.
