Conference on Transcendence and L-functions
Fields Institute
to be held at the Fields Institute, Toronto (map)

Organizers: M. Ram Murty (Queen’s) and V. Kumar Murty (Toronto)

Overview
Special values of L-functions and their transcendental nature is an area of current interest in number theory. Often, these values can be decomposed into an algebraic part and a transcendental part, with the former being related to the size of some "natural group" and the latter being a "period" in the widest sense of the term. In the past, most of the focus has been on the algebraic part of the special values. This conference will focus on the transcendental part.

There are many conjectures (some arising from K-theory) as to what these transcendental values should be, especially in the context of Dedekind zeta functions. For example, there is the conjecture of Zagier, the conjectures of Chowla and Milnor on the linear independence of special values of Hurwitz zeta functions, and the celebrated conjectures of Stark on special values of Artin L-series at s=1.

This mini-conference will bring several experts and junior researchers together so that these topics can be exposed and explored in an informal setting.
