January 9-11, 2006
Audio and Slides from talks

January 9, 2006 --3:30 p.m.
Irrational quadratic forms I.

I will talk about distribution of values at integral points of indefinite irrational quadratic forms. Both indefinite and positive definite forms will be considered. Connections with the theory of homogeneous flows will be discussed.

January 10, 2006 --3:30 p.m.
Indefinite qiadratic forms II.

This is the continuation of the first talk with more attention to technical aspects of the proofs.

January 11, 2006 --3:00 p.m.
On one interesting class of functions on the space of lattices.
I will describe a class of functions on the space of lattices in the n-dimensional Euclidean space. These functions play an important role in the proofs of results mentioned in the first two talks and can be also used in the study of recurrence properties of random walks on homogeneous spaces.

Gregory Margulis received the Fields medal in 1978. He was awarded the Medal of the Collège de France (1991) and in the same year he was elected an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Science. In 1995 he received the Humboldt Prize and in 1996 he was honoured by election as a member of the Tata Institute of fundamental research. He has held a chair at Yale University since 1991.

Margulis was awarded the Wolf Prize in Mathematics in 2005. The Wolf Prize jury cited him"for his monumental contributions to algebra, in particular to the theory of lattices in semi-simple Lie groups, and striking applications of this to ergodic theory, representation theory, number theory, combinatorics, and measure theory."
"His work is characterized by extraordinary depth, technical power, creative synthesis of ideas and methods from different areas of mathematics, and grand architectural unity in its final form."

The Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS) brings a leading mathematician to the Institute to give a series of three one-hour lectures. The recipient has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of the mathematical sciences and with excellence in research.
