Abstract:
The liquid drop model goes back to Gamow's theory for atomic nuclei in the 1930s. It is widely used in the physics literature, but there are still many open questions concerning its mathematical properties. I will discuss some rigorous results on the existence and nonexistence of minimizers, as well as the connection of these results to the ionization problem for atoms. The talk is based on joint work with Rupert L. Frank.
