SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES

March 28, 2024

Sept. 14-16, 2006
Probability-Statistics Days on Lorenz-Gini Type Asymptotic Methods in Statistics and their Applications
held at Carleton University

Location: Laboratory of Research in Statistics and Probability, within School of Mathematics and Statistics

Organizers: Miklós Csörgö
Mohamedou Ould Haye
Barbara Szyszkowicz

Overview of the topic

For a hundred years, the methods proposed by Lorenz and Gini for measuring inequality have enjoyed increased interest and wide applicability in Economics, Social and Medical Sciences. Many indices of inequality, dispersion, etc. in the aforementioned and other areas of application
rely on the Lorenz curve and various extensions and generalizations of the Gini index. Approaches of estimating the curves and indices have been developed by numerous researchers, mostly working in the areas of Probability Theory, Statistics, and Econometrics. Recently, deep and far-reaching results have been obtained to allow for data sets with various structures of dependence. Specifically, we have witnessed the emergence of such important generalizations of Lorenz curves and Gini indices as convexifications of stochastic processes and those allowing for different weights on various parts of the income distribution. Internal and external Research Members of the LRSP (Laboratory of Research in Statistics and Probability, Carleton University and the University of Ottawa) have made considerable contributions to this Lorenz-Gini area.

Aim of the Event

This event aims at providing participants – professors, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, government researchers – with the most advanced probabilistic and statistical inferential results in the area. We expect to attract researchers in Mathematical and Social Sciences.

Format of the Event

We plan that the event will last for two days and a half. Specifically, the first day of lectures to make the audience aware, and familiarize, with manyfold applications of Lorenz-type curves and Gini-type indices. The remaining one day and a half will be devoted to talks on recent developments in the area.
