Lyryx Learning grew from research and development at the Department of Mathematics & Statistics of the University of Calgary, with objectives to create engaging online material supporting both students and instructors.

The flagship of the Lyryx line of products is a unique online assessment system going far beyond the standard multiple-choice exams most commonly used in current electronic assessment. The difference is in the feedback provided as part of the marking, in a manner very similar to a human tutor. An experienced instructor can greatly anticipate student reaction to a given problem, provide a marking scheme that could foresee most student difficulties, and help them learn from their mistakes. With the help of this expertise, we implement such a scheme in all our products. Feedback and guidance to the student is programmed accordingly, incorporating extensive analysis of student answers.

Lyryx is developing Lyryx Interactive and Lyryx Assessment products.

The first offer narrated and animated lessons, interactive and visual tools, course notes, assessment, and online collaborative learning tools such as a messageboard; the second offer assessment only.

Lyryx Assessment Business Mathematics

This product contains assessment only in the form of labs. The reason for the name, as opposed to quizzes for example, is that students can try them as many times as they wish. New labs are randomly generated each time, and after they submit a lab for marking, they receive extensive feedback on their work, thus promoting their learning experience. Each time a lab is completed, only a better mark is recorded, thus encouraging students to try again until full mastery of the content has been achieved. At any time, students have access to their grades and can view their best labs.

For instructors, the goal of the product is to use these labs for course marks instead of creating and marking their own, saving them and teaching assistants valuable time to instead help students directly. After registering their course with us, an instructor can create labs of their choice by selecting problems from our test bank, and set a deadline for each one of these labs. Instructors have access to all their students' marks and can view their best labs. At any time, the instructors can download the class grades for their own programs.

The content is based on Business Mathematics in Canada, 4th Edition, by F. Ernest Jerome Carroll and published by McGraw-Hill Ryerson. The marking and feedback of the problems has been developed and implemented with the help of experienced instructors in business mathematics.

Lyryx Interactive Linear Algebra

This is the first fully online course developed by Lyryx, consisting of a complete college level linear algebra course. The material been tested and overwhelmingly supported by over 4000 students at the University of Calgary and elsewhere.

The instructor can register their courses, and use the labs for course marks instead of having to create and mark their own. This saves instructors and teaching assistants valuable time that can instead be used to help students directly. The website can also be used in the classroom as a demonstration tool, saving time on the computations and thus allowing the instructor to concentrate on more important issues.

The content is based on Elementary Linear Algebra, 1st Edition by W. Keith Nicholson and published by McGraw-Hill Ryerson. The marking and feedback of the problems has been developed and implemented with the help of experienced instructors in business mathematics.

This product has just been released in September 2002. The material is based on the textbook Fundamental Accounting Principles, 10th Edition, authored by K. D. Larson, T. Jensen and R. F. Carroll and published by McGraw-Hill Ryerson.
