Letter from the Editors: Introducing the Second FMEJ Issue and the Move to Springer

Dragana Martinovic, Donna Kotsopoulos

Abstract

This volume of the Fields Mathematics Education Journal includes two articles, each exploring a different aspect of mathematics and mathematics teacher education. The first article, by Angelica Mendaglio, reviews mathematics education and teacher education in Finland, a county whose high standing in international standardized test rankings has been of great interest worldwide. Mendaglio’s review compares and contrasts Ontario’s approach in these areas with that of Finland. The second article, by Nadine Bednarz and Jérôme Proulx, looks more closely at how elementary teachers understand fractions, focusing in particular on how their understanding of the concept of the whole is underpinned by a complex understanding of fractional parts. The article highlights possible conceptual challenges that may arise for students in the teaching of fractions.
Future issues of the Fields Mathematics Education Journal will be published by Springer. Authors are invited to visit our new web site at http://fieldsmathed.com/. All articles published by the Fields Mathematics Education Journal are openly accessible online immediately upon publication. There is no subscription charge or article-processing charge.
